A patient advocate in a large air ambulance system serves as a direct point of contact for all patient and family inquiries. Some of these are as easy as "I lost my bag" while others involve multi day and multi factorial delays. In this session, we will review the role and how it fits into the air medical system. We will describe some of the common inquiries, how we report and monitor the investigations and follow up with patients as well as review some of the current projects and future goals.
Over the last few years, Karla has been involved in the development and roll out of an updated Disclosure Protocol within the Ornge system. Together with the Associate Medical Director, the speakers will review the management of patient safety incidents and the process of disclosure at Ornge. We will review the challenges to disclosure in the prehospital environment and our efforts to overcome some of these barriers.
Learning Objectives:
Describe the role of a patient advocate and how they might benefit the patient experience.
Demonstrate the steps to developing an organizational disclosure policy and the management of patient safety incidents.
Describe strategies to overcome the unique challenges of disclosure in an air ambulance system including overcoming the barriers of perceptions of disclosure.
