The Blame Game: How a Failure to Learn Impacted My Leadership Philosophy

This presentation will be a personal story from Ben's time as a Marine Corps pilot. It affected Ben's leadership philosophy and has greatly influenced how he leads his company. If we choose to blame others instead of taking opportunities to learn, we will never maximize safety. Ben was directly involved in a mishap that left a young Marine with permanent injuries. Had the appropriate level of learning occurred after a nearly identical mishap a year prior, the second could have been avoided.

Hear Ben's story and the steps and learning that ensued from those critical events.

  • Explain the importance of learning from past mistakes and failures in order to prevent them in the future.
  • Emphasize and internalize the importance for a learning culture and “just culture” in their organization.
  • Eliminate the idea that “blame” is a resolution and instead shift their mindset to one in which learning increases safety.
