This lecture will discuss the challenges and best practices for transporting newborns who were discharged home but develop critical illnesses after discharge. In certain areas of the country, these infants are referred to as "dirty babies." It is crucial to have a good assessment of these infants, especially looking for shock, heart defects, and respiratory emergencies. Charlie will cover the appropriate interventions for each of these critical conditions to improve patient outcomes during transport including pharmacological agents, the isolette, and the ventilator. By the end of this lecture, attendees will have a deeper understanding of the unique challenges of transporting "dirty babies" and the best practices to ensure their safety during transport in the instance you must become the neonatal transport team.
Learning Objectives:
Identify the critical conditions that "dirty babies" are at risk for developing, including shock, heart defects, and respiratory emergencies.
Analyze the appropriate interventions for managing critical conditions in "dirty babies," such as administering oxygen and medications, and utilizing specialized equipment.
Describe mission planning for transport of "dirty babies," including identifying necessary equipment and coordinating with the receiving facility.
