Charlie Swearingen, an amputee since birth, grew up on the Mississippi Gulf Coast with his parents, Gene and Jan. He received prosthetics when he was a year old, but this did not hinder his accomplishments. In 1995, he graduated from Millsaps College in Jackson, MS, and later attended paramedic school at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMC). Charlie was hired as a flight paramedic on UMC's helicopter transport program, AirCare, and utilized his new skills to aid the victims of Hurricane Katrina. He published peer-reviewed articles in the field of air medical transport and began a PhD in physiology. In 2007, he founded Meducation Specialists, which offers critical care education, including the first fully online and IBSC critical care certification program and choose-your-own-adventure simulation games. In 2010, he joined the US national volleyball team with the goal of competing in the 2012 Olympics. He represented the US and USA Volleyball at the Rio Summer games in 2016. Currently, Charlie is the lead critical care educator for North American Rescue and collaborates with other critical care education teams worldwide. He also donates time to the Chive Charities, serves on their board, and delivers motivational speeches. Charlie and his wife, Marge, and daughter, Isla, reside in Brandon, MS. He plans to complete his PhD and continue training with USA volleyball while reuniting with AirCare to transport the sick and injured full time.
