Closing General Session

Gather one last time with your fellow attendees before heading home for our closing keynote presentation by Matias Ferreira. Hear closing statements from AAMS leadership and learn the names of a few additional award winners!

Matias Ferreira is currently an active Police Officer with the Suffolk County Police Department in Suffolk County, New York- and the first Double Amputee Patrolman in the country. An immigrant from Montevideo, Uruguay, Matias joined the United States Marine Corps as a Machine Gunner assigned to 1st Battalion 8th Marines 2nd Marine Division, stationed in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. During a combat tour (Operation Enduring Freedom) in Afghanistan in 2010, Matias stepped on an IED causing him to lose both legs below the knees, amongst other injuries. Matias' presentation will discuss the experiences and rehabilitation journey after this traumatic event and both the physical and mental adjustments that he has made and continues to adapt to.

Hear Matias’ discuss his personal experiences as a patient and how his journey can provide insights for clinicians in their approach to patient care. Learn how the techniques he still utilizes to this day to navigate his everyday life can be adapted by clinicians who are working with patients with similar injuries.
