Ineffective communication between transport crews including sending and receiving facility staff may cause patient morbidity and mortality and accounts for additional medical costs that total over $2,000,000,000 annually. Despite these facts miscommunication still persists. This presentation reviews concepts of communication, introduces theories on why communication fails, provides an interactive case review, and offers evidence-based interventions to improve communication.

Learning Objectives:

  • Evaluate their current communication skills within their practice and identify areas for improvement.
  • Recall two concepts related to communication and reflect how they affect nursing practice.
  • Identify two standardized communication interventions for their practice to improve communication.
