Checklists are ubiquitous in both the aviation industry and the healthcare industry, so it is no surprise that they have a place in air medical transport. However, understanding the nuances of checklist development, including content, length, order and more, will help leadership teams create more effective checklists and ensure that staff actually use them. A case study will highlight how a collaborative effort by the Quality Management Department and the Clinical Department at Life Flight Network designed a checklist to address the recurrent issue of medical equipment being left behind. Shared data will demonstrate the difference in forgotten equipment events before and after the implementation of the checklist. Ultimately, using the right checklist at the right time can prevent errors of all variety and contribute to crew and patient safety.

Design an effective checklist to accomplish anything from a high-acuity/low-frequency task to a routine aspect of daily operations.
Describe the science of behavior change and motivation, and ensure checklist use by staff whenever applicable.
